“She shouldn’t have chased Sabalenka.” The legend says it directly about Świątek
Iga Świątek has to deal with a form crisis. And this is not a figment of journalists’ or experts’ imagination, but the Polish woman’s recent results clearly illustrate this. In the WTA Cincinnati tournament , the leader of the WTA ranking was eliminated in the semi-finals, while in the US Open she reached the quarter-finals.
The bigger concern, however, is Światek’s attitude on the court. The 23-year-old is making a series of mistakes that she can’t handle. They keep repeating themselves, which only increases the player’s frustration. And there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
On the other end of the spectrum is Aryna Sabalenka . The Belarusian is doing great on hard courts, as evidenced by her wins in Cincinnati and New York. Świątek is not doing so well on this surface.
Mats Wilander , a former tennis player and winner of the 1988 US Open, believes that our representative should not be influenced by Sabalenka’s game. The Swede, in an interview with sport.pl, admits that such tactics do not work in the case of Świątek.
– It seems to me that at the moment, on fast hard courts, Iga is trying unnecessarily to catch up with the flat-hitting players in terms of speed. She shouldn’t chase Sabalenka, because when she plays like that, she wins points quickly, but also misses quickly, makes mistakes – he said.
Wilander advises the WTA ranking leader to play on hard surfaces as she does on clay. At the same time, the 60-year-old suggests a change of attitude. In his opinion, Świątek should not be discouraged by failures on less popular surfaces.
– In my opinion, Iga will never win as much on fast hard courts as on clay courts, but I think she should not look for big changes, but base her game on clay, on the forehand with topspin – he noted.
Let us recall that the leader of the WTA ranking will be back on the court in a few days. The player announced her participation in the WTA Seoul tournament, which will take place from September 16-22.
