Patrick Mahomes’ Unconventional Game-Day Superstition: The Unchanging Red Underwear
At the age of just 28, Patrick Mahomes boasts an impressive two-time NFL MVP and two-time Super Bowl champion status. Surprisingly, the secret behind the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s success may be traced back to a pair of red underwear. Mahomes recently revealed that he has worn the same red underwear for every single NFL game throughout his six-year career.
This intriguing revelation first came to light when former Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne, who served as Mahomes’ backup from 2018 to 2022, shared the unusual detail during an interview with ESPN’s Adam Schefter on his podcast earlier this year.
Henne mentioned that Mahomes is quite particular about various things, including his notes. However, when Henne disclosed that Mahomes also maintains a consistent choice of underwear for every game, Schefter was visibly surprised. Henne humorously commented, “There are things that I’ve seen that nobody else has seen.”
Schefter couldn’t help but question the persistence of this habit, given Mahomes’ massive half-billion-dollar contract. “So he signs this half-billion-dollar contract and he’s still wearing the same pair of underwear throughout his entire career?” Schefter asked incredulously. Henne responded, “Only on Sundays.”
Mahomes confirmed this unique superstition during a recent interview on Monday Night Football with Eli and Peyton Manning on ESPN. Eli Manning playfully inquired, “I love a good superstition, but can’t you just do the same pre-game meal? Does it have to be the red underwear?”
Mahomes defended his choice, stating, “First, my wife Brittany got them for me. So I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them.” He continued, “At the same time, I threw them on that first season, and we had a pretty good season that season.”
For those curious about the condition of the frequently worn underwear, Mahomes clarified that he only wears them on game days to prevent wear and tear. He also mentioned that he occasionally cleans them. “I mean if we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them, you know? I’ve just got to keep it rolling,” he quipped. “As long as we’re winning, I’ll keep the superstition going.”
