To nie tak miało wyglądać. Iga Świątek po bardzo słabym spotkaniu przegrała z Qinwen Zheng 2:6, 5:7 i nie zagra w finale igrzysk olimpijskich. W całym meczu liderka światowego rankingu popełniła aż 36 niewymuszonych błędów. W piątek w meczu o trzecie miejsce Świątek zagra z gorszą z pary Anna Karolina Schmiedlova – Donna Vekić.
Przed meczem trudno było wyobrazić sobie, by Iga Świątek mogła mieć problemy w meczu z Qinwen Zheng. Liderka światowego rankingu rozkręcała się ze spotkania na spotkanie, a Chinka miała za sobą dwa bardzo trudne mecze z Emmą Navarro i Angelique Kerber, w których broniła piłek meczowych, a na korcie spędziła ponad sześć godzin.
